Cedar Thank-You Boxes

It’s the middle of September – with the welcoming of cooler weather, it is now possible to put more hours in at the carving shed!

With our book OUT of the WOODS. Woodworkers Along the Salish Sea about to be released, several of us wood artists are making special commemorative cedar book boxes to gift to some of our supporters.

I have finished two and plan to make several more. I am making rustic split cedar shake boxes, with a simple carved lid. I use a froe and mallet to split the shakes from a standing cedar block. Each box is assembled to hold one of our books – 8.5″ x 11″ x 1″ thick. I hold the box together with canoe nails and copper boat nails, with a bit of gorilla glue but that really is not necessary. Each box is finished with tung oil to go from this…

Some of our other carvers will make some as well – some are rustic, and others will be more in keeping with fine woodwork.
