Rarely does one find birds eye red cedar. This large burl came from the Franklin river area – Alberni Canal, Vancouver Island. This piece is unique because of its size, the birds eye patterns and its attractive wood colour, and interior markings such as the black carved out area where there once was a live black ant colony, long ago! When carving the interior, I came across the dead ants!
This burl would have come from an old standing red cedar giant, west coast rain forest.
